Empowering Caregivers:
Understanding the Dynamics of Respite Care
Respite services offer short-term relief to unpaid or primary caregivers, alleviating them from the daily responsibilities of caregiving. This support includes assistance with personal care, activities of daily living (ADLs), and, if necessary, medication assistance and supervision. Respite can be provided in the caregiver’s home, the provider’s home, or in community settings, ensuring flexibility to meet the specific needs of the participant. The setting and services are tailored to support the identified needs of the participant, with a limitation of up to two participants concurrently. However, this number may extend to three if they are family members residing in the same household and can be safely supported by a single provider. Additionally, respite providers may offer supervision to children under 12 or other individuals needing support, with a maximum limit of three individuals, unless Division-approved. Providers adhere strictly to the supervision levels outlined in each participant’s Individual Plan of Care (IPC).
